Sources of Inspiration

I suppose I should introduce myself… I’m Lakota Phillips. I know most of you writers from my previous incarnation, which was full of all things goddessy. Pffft. I know that’s not a real word. I tend to make things up. Comes with the territory.
A big thank you to Lisa Andel for letting me jump in here and play with you today. I’ll be in and out all day and into the evening, so stop in and chat.  Now for my babble:

Sources of Inspiration
Writers, like any other form of artists, take in the world around them, chew it up a bit, then regurgitate it in a new and exciting form. Well, the process is a little less icky than that sounds. However, the fount of creativity springs forth from action / reaction, whether it’s our own or another’s, it take a trigger to spark the creative response.

The smallest thing can spark a story idea, or inspire a character antidote. For example, I’m now the proud owner of a messy pile of notes for a psychological suspense story, thanks to some pervy guy taking my picture a few weeks ago with his cellphone camera. Add to that a facebook game I started playing recently. The dynamics of the “sex game” smoothly clicks in place as a tool for the villain. Suddenly an entire new world, with frantic characters demanding attention, opens up.

It isn’t only funny, odd, mundane, extraordinary, creepy incidents that can set off a chain reaction of imaginative musings. Other writers can often impact us. At a recent writers’ group meeting, my girlfriend Rho shared an excerpt of her WIP (work in progress for any non-writers reading this) and her female lead character was soooooooo deliciously wicked and ripe with loveable evilness, that it has made me want to revisit one of my characters and make her just a touch more badass. Oh, the fun I’ll have with that one.
**Happy grin**

So, spill ye writerly types. What has found its way into your stories, or what has triggered a blaze of creativity for you? And readers, what things have you seen, experienced or thought “wow, that would be great in a story?”

Heh. Hey Lakota! Thanks for joining us today here at EM.

GREAT POST!!!

Nekkid men inspire me. Yeah, that's it. And sometimes I even hear the things they have to say and THAT inspires me.

I could use some good inspiration right about now...

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

Oh, darling, the things that inspire me... buying chicken. Handwriting. Brownies. PMS. I'm working on turning an experience at Costco, when they wouldn't let me pay for my bread and milk, into an outtake.

You name it, that's where inspiration lies.

dan e'boy said...

muwah's back at ya kota baby...
thought i'd drop in and say a big hello and pat ya on the back for a good job..:)

Lakota said...

Now there is a wonderful inspiration - nekkid men! Umm, yeah - so maybe I have peeked at one or two in my time. Purely research of course. :P

Susan, you are one of the most gifted writers I've met that can take any topic, right off the cuff and spin it into a scenario. Chickens, huh? Errrrr.... LOL!

Thnx Danny sweets! I appreciate very much all the support you give me - all the time! Hmmmm.... I need to write one of your race cars into a story... :D

Vik, that was almost, kinda, sorta poetic. Sorta.

Lakota said...

LOL! let's see... bald, poetic... is that you Ozy? And let me just say bald is also a look that is way more sexy on men than on women. Not that I didn't appreciate the Sinead look, mind you. But for most of us women - bald, really not good.

Lakota said...

Thanks Lisa! See ya tomorrow! Probably my tonight, huh? :D xxxx

dan e'boy said...

yes.. i fear the paint what aint isn't too far round the corner either!!

Lakota said...

LOL! Well fear not Danny sweets - women DO find bald men very, very sexy. Cross my heart! :D

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

Green Hair? Did I see mention of Green Hair? Kota, you know Mitchell had green hair for awhile there?

And what's Lisa doing Down Under? Who gave her permission to do such a thing???

Lakota said...

Where have you been? She dug a hole to down under the day after Xmas. :D Next she's on her way to... SIN. ~chuckling...ah, it never gets old~

Lakota said...

Oh like you have anything to worry about Mister Looks-Smashing-in-a-Tux!

dan e'boy said...

aww thanks kota darling...
cheque or cash???? lol

Rhonda Leigh Jones said...

Dang! I ALWAYS come late to the party! Aw...Kota. I inspired you to character tweak? Awesome! Faces inspire me, big-time. I know that sounds weird, but there you are. And other people's work. I'll think, "Well what if I did that THIS way?" And then you have something almost completely unrecognizable. I like to take things to the next step, or off the beaten path. Strong emotion inspires me. I want to see what people will do in desperate situations, when they're forced to take off the mask and be real for a change. And of course, Kota, you inspire me. Always have.

dan e'boy said...

p.s...still waitin for a kota pimped up pic....:)..when u get a little time one day maybe??
iz off...have a good rest of yer day kota..xxx

Lakota said...

Thnx Danny sweets and I'm so sorry - I forgot I owed you a spoof still! You may spank at your convenience. Thnx for hanging my darling! Have a grand evening! xxxx

RHO!!!! Tackling you for smooches! And yeah - duh - you inspired changes! Of course, that is nothing new... I hang with you for a few hours and spin off in multiple new directions. LOL! Only one of the many reasons I adore you. I also love your daring and willingness to explore the darker side of things... we are so overdue to a late night coffee session where we peel back the onion layers of humanity. :D

Lakota said...

Oh and Rho - just for the survey... Chickens... do chickens inspire you? (heh)

Woozie said...

Omg, hi!

Inspiration how about pain

Anonymous said...

And I alone in my repose
Must speak of things no one knows
With silence held and words unspoken
Before us lies a life well broken
But leave it there, let it rot
Time moves on, soon forgot
And worry not this pitifully weak
It’s only I of whom we speak

Lakota said...

LOL! It's just you Bobby! Come to the light, come to the light! Oh shoot the batteries in the flashlight just went out. ~sheepish grin~
Thnx for stopping by honey! Big smooches for you!

Anon... is this who i think it is? And yeah, that is one of the most powerful inspirations of all. It's where that whole tortured artist stereotype comes from, which I sometimes have to confess has a basis in reality - at least from personal perspective. Some of my most powerful poems and paintings were born from needing to release a hurt. But boy howdy, that is a tough way to create. xxxx

Lakota said...

you just wrote that didn't you? I think one of the reasons that poetry birthed from pain is so relatable is that it so often addresses a place we have all visited.

Anonymous said...

you bet sweet thing just finished it so am I who you think I am

Lakota said...

LOL! Nope - the sweet thing gave you away! That's great stuff - you have more you can share?

Anonymous said...

"hehehehe" annon giggles
I would have been hurt had you missed that clue you did say I was the first and only

Lakota said...

LOL! Iz true - i'm usually the one running around calling people "sweet thang" - never had anyone turn it around on me before. :D Sorry you missed Lisa - she's gone nighty night in Oz.

or was trying to figure out how blogging worked huh???????

lol sweet thang

Samantha Lucas said...

Hey all! :D

This is a busy place!

Stopped by to say Hi, but your blog tied in so nicely with something that happened last night, I figure I'll share.

Dale and I were parked at a truck stop and the lot was empty, but this mini van decided to park right next to us and so close that Dale could barely get in his door.

He of course complained, but me being me, I started spinning wild tales about why this person had to park right next to us when the lot was empty.

I got several great ideas for the series I'm currently writing. lol ;-)

Lakota said...

Hey Sam! Waving frantically! :D
That's exactly what i'm talking about - the tiniest thing can sometimes light a spark and off we go in our heads! LOL!
Great to see you hon!
I'll be doing book pimping again this year on my blog (new one) - so give me a shout when you have something coming out!

Samantha Lucas said...

Thanks!

I actually have something coming out on the 30th!

I swear I've gotten so out of writing this year, personal life :P, but I'm on a crazy quest to write 300,000 words in 60 days. Started Jan 1 and I'm just about to hit 25k WOOHOO!!

Lakota said...

Wow - that's great Sam!
I just wanna get the last few chapters of mine finished by end of the month and i'll be beside myself with joy.
Can you send me linky or email me info so i can do a wahoo for your book?

Wylie Kinson said...

My latest wip was inspired by a "what if" conversation with my hubby over the summer.
A "what if the civilization were ending because of ... (insert disaster here - global warming, war, alien invasion, deadly virus outbreak)"

Hence my post-apocolyptic love story came to life!

Good to see you, btw :)

Samantha Lucas said...

You're so sweet!

I only subbed one story all last year! YIKES!! So I decided I needed a major jump start and I have a six book series that I've been dying to write, so I jumped right in the deep end. lol

Anyway my next book is Legacy of Fear, it's available at Cobblestone Press on the 30th, email me if you need more info. :)

Lakota said...

Good to see you too Wylie sweets! Miss ya more than i can express. Thnx for comment over at my place too.
I've always been fascinated with the post-apocolyptic type scenarios - I guess because there are endless number of both physical and psychological challenges to overcome.
Big hugs and smooches and thanks for popping over.

Thnx Sam - I'll need excerpt and cover art - so i'll pop you off an email this week. Yay - another book to pimp!

Hi Lakota sweetie!!! Oh inspiration. So easy sometimes, such a . . . well, bitch, other times! :) I think my greatest inspiration is music . . . I love it, feel it, totally crave it!! :) Great post, sweets!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Lakota said...

YAY! Red! You came by! Whoot!
Pouncing for a smooch!
So is it that certain songs just hit you, or a genre of music that gets your creativity rockin and rolling? I'm that way when i paint - have to have music playing and the type depends on the type of painting i'm doing and the stage i'm at in it. Playing the Ramones while trying to do very fine detail... not so good. Playing the Ramones while dancing around and laying down underpaint - oh yeah baby! :D

Lakota said...

Okay - y'all - i'm away for next several hours at a Wake - be back around 8:30pm EST and will respond to any comments then. Do carry on and let me know your thoughts, what you've been up to.
If anyone wants to jump in and respond to comments for me while i'm gone - that would be awesomely cool. :D xxxxx later taters! Kota

Stopped by to say hello! Would have jined the party earlier but hand grandbabies and we went to see Despereaux...awwwwww....so cute....until the popcorn started flying, two year old sarted whining...oy vey...I can hardly wait until the release of Coraline!

As far as inspiration...
rainy soccer games...
boob jobs...
an entertaining dinner conversation wit friends about ED and PME...

Gotta go, babies are Toooooo quiet!

Hugs all around,
Roxy

T.A.Chase said...

Hey Lakota,

What inspires me?

Pictures (neekid men and other kinds as well.) lol
Music.
Conversations I overhear in line at stores or sitting in restaurants.

Life, can't get anymore basic than that.

L. Lane said...

What a great blog!

I think that, as writers, we can't help but gain inspiration from various aspects of our lives. Life itself is such an inspiration. Art imitates life.

For me, I think about all of the problems in this world, and then I wonder, "How can I express this in my writing? What can I do, as a writer, to make others ponder the issues that are important to me?"

Hi Lakota! *mhua*

Late arrival but you know how it is...can't stop by Erotic Muses while on the work computer...

Inspiration usually comes to me when I least expect it. Generally when I'm really concentrating on another artist's work, gazing at a painting or a photograph, at a live concert, at the ballet, etc. All of a sudden an entire scene will pop into my head, and then I'm left trying to make sense of 'who was that? Why was he doing that? Who made him so upset?' And on and on and on.

Amy Ruttan said...

Oh lord, things that inspire. Anything. Watching movies, TV, music. Scenery. Dreams.

It just happens like a spark.

Great post Lakota! ;)

Lakota said...

Rox! Baby! Big hugz and kisses to you for popping by! From rainy soccer games to boobs, pretty much runs the gambet! LOL! Hope the babies behaved for you - thanks for showing your support! Whew - da woman, she moves fast! :D

Hi TA my darling! Been forever and ever since we chatted! The music and nekkid men i knew and totally agree with your taste - yum. Overheard conversations... now that's a good one. I bet there is a wealth of inspiration in those snippets! Thnx for dropping in! Muwah!

Ohhh Lisa! So glad you came and yeah - it's an awesome blog isn't it? Great place to find get the skinny on what is coming out and is out in our genre. I agree completely that writers/artists have to be cognizant of what is going on around them and develop a sort of hyper-awareness. I think we disect (sp?) as much as we create.

Julia! SQUEE! Pouncing for a smooch! Missed ya! Isn't it funny how some characters can be birthed whole, like Artemis, from our brains and boy howdy - just TRY getting them to do what YOU want them to do rather than what THEY want to do! LOL! Some of those are the richest characters in stories. Susan's Trevor is like that - so completely dimensional. Not that i know if he sprang from her head that way. But i sure do love it when he pops in to grab me for some Trevor love. :P

AMY!!!! Heh - i feel like i'm at a great big reunion here and i'm running around bouncing and grinning from ear to ear. LOL! Oooooh - dreams! Yeah, that's a good one! The book i'm working on actually started as a dream. thnx so much for popping by! Love ya!

Lakota said...

Much love hugs and kisses for everyone who stopped in and showed their support! It meant a great deal to me. Had so much fun! We are so doing another get together soon!
Thank you so much Lisa for letting me hangout here. What a blast!
Love
Kota

And I feel all boy-ish that I'm this late responding. Family's okay just like always, and the only problem with writing drunk posts is that I might accidentally publish them before sobering up and making sure I don't say anything I will regret. See, when I drink, while I know when it's right to shut the fuck up I just don't care.
